A WhatsApp group where everyone speaks a different language

In a group of forty people and five languages, every message turns into a puzzle. A few ways to keep the thread and keep everyone included.

The problem with multilingual groups

An international group usually has two options: agree on one common language, or let everyone write in their own. The first excludes people who aren’t comfortable in it; the second leaves everyone unable to follow the others.

Family groups are the most common case: grandparents who write in the language they grew up with, grandchildren who answer in the language of the country they live in, and a chat that slowly becomes two separate conversations.

Three habits that help

Whatever tool you use, a little group etiquette goes a long way:

  • Agree on one language for important announcements, and leave casual chat free.
  • Write short messages with one idea each: they are easier to read and to translate.
  • Put practical information (date, place, time) in digits rather than in a long sentence, and repeat it in a separate message.

What translation can and can’t do in a group

Group chats are full of in-jokes, nicknames, voice notes and photos. Photos and voice notes need no translation and pass through everywhere. Nicknames and family expressions should stay as they are; if a translation changes one, check the original.

Group messages also move fast. It is easier to read a translation when you only open the chats you care about, rather than trying to process every message from every member at once.

With oKiKo

In the oKiKo app your groups sit alongside your other chats. Text and captions written in another language arrive translated into yours, with the original one tap away. You reply in your own language and your message goes out in the language of the group.

What you write stays as you wrote it for people who share your language: oKiKo does not change the conversation for the other members. It is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
