How do you translate WhatsApp messages on Android?
Android offers several translation shortcuts. They help with one message; for a whole conversation, a tool that stays inside the chat works better.
Built-in shortcuts
Depending on the manufacturer and the Android version, some keyboards and system menus can translate selected text or what you type. It is quick and free, but it varies from phone to phone, it does not keep the context of the conversation, and it handles slang and texting abbreviations poorly.
If you only get a message in another language now and then, this may be all you need.
Copy and paste
Copy, translate in another app, come back. For an occasional message that is enough. For a real conversation it is slow, and you cannot see how your reply will read to the other person.
A typical case is a landlord, a delivery driver or a colleague writing in a language you only half understand: the exchange needs to be quick, and constant switching between apps gets in the way.
Installing oKiKo on Android
oKiKo installs from the website, with no store: one tap on “Install the app” opens Chrome’s install window (otherwise, use the ⋮ menu, then Install app).
Then:
- Link your WhatsApp: enter your number and oKiKo shows an 8-character code to type into WhatsApp (Linked devices › Link a device › Link with phone number instead).
- Open a chat: foreign-language messages arrive in your language, and your replies go out in theirs, with a preview first.
- Allow notifications to be alerted to new messages.
What a dedicated app changes
The language of each chat is recognised, tone is taken into account (formal or informal address, slang), and the original stays one tap away. You can set the tone of your messages chat by chat.
Machine translation remains an aid: reread the preview when it matters. oKiKo is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta, and messages pass through its server and translation services to be translated.
