How do you translate WhatsApp Web on your computer?

On a big screen you write more, faster and for longer. That is where translation should step back and let the conversation flow.

Browser extensions

Several extensions add a translate button to WhatsApp Web. They are easy to install, but they only work in the browser where you installed them, they depend on the structure of WhatsApp’s page (which changes often), and they do nothing for you on your phone.

An app that connects like WhatsApp Web

oKiKo connects to your account as a linked device, the official mechanism behind WhatsApp Web: you scan a QR code with your phone (WhatsApp › Linked devices › Link a device). Nothing in WhatsApp is modified and there is no extension to maintain.

Setup:

  • Open the website in Chrome or Edge and install the app with the install icon in the address bar (it also works in a plain tab).
  • Choose “Connect WhatsApp” and scan the QR code with your phone.
  • Your chats arrive in your language; you write in yours.

The comfort of a large screen

On a computer, long messages, documents and groups are easier to handle. Very long messages go out in one piece, and you see a preview of what is being sent in the other person’s language before it leaves.

Working with suppliers, clients or colleagues abroad is where this helps most: you can keep a full conversation going without copying and pasting between windows.

Worth knowing

Free use translates incoming messages with no limit and includes 20 translated replies a day. Premium costs €9.90 a month or €79 a year, with a 7-day trial.

Machine translation is an aid: for a contract or a legal clause, have a person review it. oKiKo is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta, and messages pass through its server and translation services to be translated.
